c1940 Billy Conn The Pittsburgh Kid Opening Party Photo
Photo comes from a Pittsburgh estate of a local writer for BoxOffice Magazine and once employee of Republic Pictures in the 1940s. Republic put out “The Pittsburgh Kid,” a film starring Conn, in 1941. Its likely that these were shots from an opening party. Measures 8″ x 10″, original photo likely taken by a professional photographer. Not a copy, great piece. $60/$45.
c1920 American Missionary to India Archive
Nine pieces in total, pictured first with detail pics following. Two specific female bookmarks on heavy cardstock (2″ x 6″,) one postcard sized print of a Cleveland family in China (friends I’m sure) and another printed card (slightly larger) from India as well; four photos including a rppc taken in India, a snapshot (3″ x 5″) of the family proper taken in India (reverse reads “pray for us in India) and two smaller snapshots (2 1/2″ x 4″) that seem to have been taken in Florida – one of a pair of (Seminole?) Indian boys, and the other of a camp cook which reads “our camp cook only has one leg.” Its a remarkable little archive of early 20thc missionary work, as these were sent home to a family local to me (envelope is included with Indian postage and mailing address) and kept since. Everything is in nice condition, with slight expected wear. $60.
1940s Publicity Photo Young Lena Horne Signed
Obviously, she’s stunning. This photo was found in a WWII serviceman’s scrapbook and is presumed to be from 1942-3 because of some dated paperwork that accompanied it. Likely a USO touring piece. Measures 4 1/4″ x 6″. Because of the texture of the paper and the felt tip pen (rather than a much easier to judge ball point), I am not 100% the autograph is signed and not printed. I’m vacilating and am happy to entertain any thoughts or questions via email. I purchased it as an autograph, and it was in the company of other autographs in the scrapbook.
c1910 Steel Furnace Interior Labor Cabinet Card
This photo can make your stomach turn. The rarest subject matter in labor, in my opinion – an interior shot of the mill’s furnace. However, our photographer was not a great one – and the center figure is blurred, the photo is a bit dark and the development proper is just sloppy. I couldn’t however pass up the opportunity to save the subject matter, so despite all of that and a wavy border (poorly cut) and one bubble near the bottom right corner – its a pleasure to own. Photo measures approx 5″ x 7″ on a 7″ x 9″ mount. Likely twenty five figures in total, many holding tools – can’t beat it. Not at this price-point anyway!
c1940s Blind Newcomer Twins Wheeling WV Country Radio Stars
Born in Southwestern PA in 1925, the Newcomer Twins (Maxine and Eilene) lost their eyesight as small children and were guided by their parents into the world of music – learning early on many a stringed instrument. In their late teens the girls moved to Wheeling West Virginia where they performed on the WWVA radio station, then a popular blue grass and country station. They reached some fame and it seems as though their instruments and original pressings are all in the Country Hall of Fame. Two pieces direct from their estate, one b/w photo still shot of the girls (never used condition) and a promotional booklet sold by the girls (with an empty “To” address box on the back cover) is six pages in total of photographs and anecdotes. Both pieces are in gorgeous condition, and a rare niche. If you have an interest, drop an email. The twins were born locally to me, and I might have other pieces that I’d be willing to part with to a good home. Thanks much.
