1941 Sailboat Race Real Photo Signed to Competitor

I was excited to stumble onto this, real photo sailboat race (8×10 sight on 11×15 framed sheet) signed “N – Just to thank you for being a stout fellow and a good agrivator on many a good race, The Finnish W. E. Special Aug 2-41.”  I BELIEVE that’s what the last two lines say and I believe that it is either signed Jimy or Joey beside that.  Worth the research. Original Framing, never been apart – Keystone Framing, Pittsburgh PA sticker on the back from the 40s.

1909 Rare Antique School of Taxidermy Diploma License

Just fantastic, I’ve never seen one before – for all of you collecting antique taxidermy, here’s a killer companion piece. Diplmoma issued Dec 10, 1909 in Omaha Nebraska.  In the far left corner is a gold seal that reads “The Northwestern School / Corporate Seal of Taxidermy” and a 1″ tall photo of the graduate attached to the diploma.  Buck engraving at the center with “School of Taxidermy: Taxidermy Taught in all its Branches” motto atop. Incredible condition, largely clean and without flakes/cracks/or loss – just a few small stains, see photo.  Frame is in perfect shape, never taken apart (the backing paper has been taped – nothing else).  Measures 15.5 x 18.5″.  Even without a taxidermy collection, this is perfect Victorian goth or steampunk decor – scarce.

1930’s Jack Dempsey Grocery Store Cereal Endorsement Standee Photo

1930’s 8×10 photo from a Sunshine Krispy Crackers (and other brands by the same manufacturer) grocery store interior display shot, beautiful photo – with five Jack Dempsey displays in view – three of Dempsey in a boxing pose and uniform and two in a suit teaching two youngsters.  Dempsey advertising appears clear as day.

1920s-50s Sunshine Biscuits Loose Wiles Salesmans Archive

Sunshine Biscuits / Loose Wiles / Pittsburgh Bakery Salesmans kit, dates from 1923 to 1951 that I can see – with most of it concentrated in the 1940s.  Approximately 75+ pieces of ephemera including two to three dozen photos (half a dozen or better 8×10 store display photos and half a dozen store display snapshots.)  Products include Krispy Saltines, Hydrox Cookies, Hi Ho and many other brand names.  Please take a look at the photographs, they archive almost every type of paper included in this case (first photo is of the entire lot packed up in the salesman’s box) – receipt books, spiff catalogs, propaganda, photos, letterhead and personal notes – just an amazing archive of a 40 year sales career for a well loved company.  Salesman served Pittsburgh to Johnstown PA, it appears.  Condition is very nice in general, occasional dog-ear.

1960s Arctic Eskimo Mother Child Wolf Portrait Signed

I am incredibly happy to offer (in separate auctions) two portraits of Iniut women, done by a nationally known photographer Byron Hale.  Hale spent time photographing for Geographical Survey in the Arctic seemingly between 1958 and 1978, I’m guessing by the mount that this photo was taken somewhere in the middle – in the 1960s.  Mother looks down on her son, who is being licked by a wolf cub.  Incredibly sweet and rare subject matter.  Photo itself measures 12″ x 13 1/2″ and is mounted to 16″ x 20″ with the title “Arctic Mother” and signature of Byron Hale in pencil on right.  The photo does have light crease lines where there might have been bubbles when originally laid down, please see photos for exact condition.

1960s Inuit Eskimo Alaska Female Photograph Signed

Found in Southwestern PA, I am offering two female portraits (appear to be 1960s, perhaps 50s) in two different auctions this week.  This photo is the larger of the two, measures 15.5″ x 18.5″  and is signed by Byron Hale (a nationally recognized photographer – recognized for one pivotal WWII photo and many a geographical survey photo of the Arctic ranging from the 1950s-70s.)  She is titled “Kotzebue Belle” and a quick google look up tells me that Kotzebue lies 33 miles north of the Arctic Circle.  Not much else to be said, this is a stunning and large example of an incredibly rare subject matter – and to top it off, she’s beautiful.  Photo is in extremely good condition, there is a bit of staining through the fur (a bit of glue bleed from his mount I believe) that hardly detracts.

c1915 Railroad Labor Strike 8 Hour Days Cabinet Photo

Railroad workers on a track, about two dozen (both workers and management) with lanterns and axes in full view.  Two sit on top of the caboose – on which they have written “8 Hours Bof RI 439 & 225″ along with an Uncle Sam shouting “I Want 8 Hours.”  Not quite a strike, but an outcry – when they knew they were getting this picture taken for the rails owners.  Sight size is approx 8″ x 10″ on 12″ x 14″ mount.  Gorgeous image, clear – undamaged and the contrast is magnificent.  The mount too is undamaged, has a bump to the right top corner – nothing else.

c1900 Crystal Ice Company Horse and Buggy Occupational Cabinet Card

I will admit the image has gone a bit light, but the pose and subject matter allows for it.  Two men, the salesman and the boy/driver are posed in front of a two horse team in blinders, pulling an Ice wagon.  The side of the wagon is painted “Crystal Ice, M. Brown.” Posed photo, just wonderful.  The area is unknown but it came from a Johnstown PA estate, so its likely local.  Photo measures 4 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ on slightly larger mount, the photo shows minor wear to the left bottom corner and was cut uneven at the bottom – not particularly noticeable.  Great content.

1930s Female Basketball Player RPPC – Memento to her Coach

What a terribly cool piece, a female basketball player in uniform – posed with the ball in her hand, AZO RPPC.  The front is inscribed “I will always remember my dear coach and friend, Miss WItherow. Please think of me a little, Shanty.”  On the reverse is written “Miss WItherow.”  A memento to her coach as she graduated, most likely, how rare a subject matter can you get?
