Pr 19thc Greek Gods Cemetery Gothic Stone Sculptures

Unbelievable pair of mid to third quarter 19thc stone figural mythological or religious sculptures from a cemetery chapel, here in SWPA.  The chapel has been demolished and sold for parts by the cemetery, and these were purchased from their original owner who has had them some twenty years.  Whether they were meant to hang (I don’t believe so, but wouldn’t rule it out) or if they always laid flat…they are beautiful gothic cemetery statuary.  Each measures 20″ long by 9″ wide and 7″ high in relief.  They appear to be recumbent on a pillow and cover, each wears a defined robe and poses towards each other – they lean in to each other, terribly romantic.  Certainly have seen their share of weathering and the faces are all but washed away, and the feet are damaged as shown – but they are simply incredible and cannot be easily matched.  Each weighs approximately 60 pounds.

c1880 The Last of the Abbots Saint Benet Rev. Brown

“The Last of the Abbots or The Monks of Saint Benet’s.  A Tale Illustrative of the Time of the Dissolution of Religious Houses in England” by the Rev. Arthur Brown.  London, S.W. Partridge & Co. 9 Paternoser Row.  Book meausures 5″ x 7 1/2″, 96 pages in a gold embossed oxford brown cloth binding that makes it easy to date as c1880 or thereabouts.  Incredibly rare subject matter, and I can find no record of the book proper.  The title page is loose, and there is a 1″ separation at the top of the spine from the front of the binding – otherwise the condition is gorgeous, especially considering the paperstock on which it is printed.

1880 D. L. Moody Heaven Evangelist Evangelism First Ed

Possibly the most famous work ever written by an Evangelist, Heaven by D.L. Moody.  Gorgeous dark blue oxford cloth cover with gold impress around the title.  Measures 5 1/2″ x 8″, 107 pgs.  Is not a stated first edition, but is apparent.  Copyright date is the only date listed – and the inscription is to an engineer (presumably) in the Erie Railroad 1881, in pencil inside front cover.  Very nice condition with only minor wear to corners.

Prince Arumugam: The Steadfast Indian Convert.  Translated from the German by Miss Helena Long.  Second Edition.  St. Louis, Mo. 1897.  Published by Br. 1940’s Jay Nichols Spiritualism Study in Realization

Terribly odd, self published book on mimeographed paper – and bound to 8 1/2″ x 9 1/2″.  It appears as though the gentleman who inscribed it (Jay Nichols) taught a self help / spiritualism course (full of astrology, masonry, and alchemy as well as some christianity) in Indiana and the only real way to own this book was to have taken his seminar.  I have recently purchased a wonderful religious/spiritual library, and it appears as though our owner was in attendance.  Book is in gorgeous condition, red oxford cloth binding with inscription in pen just inside cover.

United Brethren Publishing House, Dayton OH, 1887.  Condition is stellar, two extremely small spots to front cover and the mildest foxing where the tissue was on the plate.  The pages are clean and crisp, you can see how tight the binding is by how close together the pages are in the photo.  Gorgeous copy of a really rare book.
